Former President Donald Trump on Saturday marked the third anniversary of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot with a  campaign stop in Clinton, Iowa, where he demanded the release of his supporters who have been detained or convicted of crimes related to the incident.

Trump referred to them as “hostages,” and said they have already suffered enough.

More than 1,200 people have been charged with participating in the riots, and over 900 have pleaded guilty or been convicted so far.

On Jan. 6, 2021, Trump supporter and others stormed the U.S. capital, some in an attempt to stop the certification of the  results of the 2020 election that Trump lost.

During his Iowa campaign stop, Trump also spoke of his own legal troubles, stating that he was indicted because he had challenged the election results. Trump’s top 2024 GOP presidential primary rivals are former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Trump is continuing his frenzied campaign blitz this week with two faith events in Iowa on Monday where he will be joined by Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders and former Diamond State Gov. Mike Huckabee in the afternoon and evening.
