Va. Dems Block Bill Requiring Care For Infants Who Survive Abortions

  • Virginia Democrats voted down a bill that would require medical care for infants born alive after a botched abortion in a Senate committee Thursday.
  • The bill, introduced by state Delegate Nick Freitas, would require medical professionals exercise the same level of care towards an infant born alive after an attempted abortion as they would for any other child. A health care provider who fails to comply with the law would face a Class 4 felony and possible disciplinary action from the Board of Medicine.
  • The bill passed the House 52 to 47 on February 7. The bill failed in the Education and Health Committee in the Senate by a vote of 9 to 6. Every Democrat voted against the bill.
