- Shortly after a jury recommended life imprisonment for Parkland mass shooter Nikolas Cruz, Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said Cruz deserved the death penalty.
- DeSantis: “I think that if you have a death penalty at all, that that is a case where you’re massacring those students with pre-meditation and utter disregard for basic humanity, that you deserve the death penalty.”
- He added: “The jurors came back, apparently it was 11-1 with one holdout, refusing to authorize the ultimate punishment, and that means that this killer’s gonna end up getting the same sentence of who’ve committed bad acts, but acts that do not rise to this level.”
