Not So Fast: Deal To End U Of Calif Academic Workers Strike Fracturing

A day after the University of California and union leaders representing 36,000 academic workers announced an agreement to end a five-week strike graduate student supporters and opponents are raising questions about the deal and appear poised to reject it.

  • The president of one of the two United Auto Workers bargaining units involved in the negotiation on Friday said the agreement was a “historic” win that would help thousands of graduate student workers with better wages and working conditions.
  • “This contract really does set a new standard for institutions of higher education,” he said a day later.
  • But opponents of the tentative pact announced on the same day said the would launch a statewide campaign to urge their peers to reject ratification, arguing the wage gains are not as significant as touted and won’t fully kick in until fall 2024.
