Toyota Pres: Industry’s ‘Silent Majority’ Questioning Electric Vehicle Only Push

Toyota President Akio Toyoda made the comment in Thailand on Monday, as automakers around the world are phasing out gas-powered automobiles, amid fears about the dire consequences of greenhouse gas emissions and climate change.

  • “People involved in the auto industry are largely a silent majority,” Toyoda said. “That silent majority is wondering whether EVs are really OK to have as a single option. But they think it’s the trend so they can’t speak out loudly.”
  • His view is reportedly long held and one he’s tried to tell governments and industry stakeholders.
  • “Because the right answer is still unclear, we shouldn’t limit ourselves to just one option,” also said Toyoda, president of the Toyota Motor Corporation, headquarters in Japan.
  • General Motors and Honda Motor Company are among those that have already set dates to go all-electric, while Toyota has also invested in hydrogen-powered cars and gas-electric hybrids.
