McCarthy Preempts Biden Speech With No Cuts, No Debt Deal Message

GOP House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Monday again called on Democrat President Joe Biden to agree to compromises on spending cuts as part of deal to get chamber Republicans to vote in favor of lifting the debt ceiling.

  • The speaker and the president have already met once at the White House on the matter and remain deadlocked over raising the nation’s $31.4 trillion debt ceiling.
  • McCarthy’s comments before Biden’s State of the Union address Tuesday night did not suggest any compromise in his and Biden’s so-far entrenched positions.
  • The White House has said the president will discuss federal spending cuts with Republicans only after the debt ceiling is lifted, while McCarthy has said Republicans will  lift the ceiling only if Biden agrees to spending cuts.
