CDC: High School Girls’ Mental Health Worsened During Pandemic

A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report released Monday shows a 58% increase in signs of depression among high school females in 2021, compared to 10 years earlier.

  • Beyond the feeling of sadness or hopelessness in 2021, 30% percent of females seriously considered attempting suicide in 2021, compared to 19%  in 2011.
  • The pandemic essentially started in early 2020 and most of the mask and lockdown orders began being being lifted in spring 2021.
  • Overall in 2021, 42% percent of high school students reported experiencing persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, the CDC also found.
  • “As we saw in the 10 years prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health among students overall continues to worsen, with more than 40% of high school students feeling so sad or hopeless that they could not engage in their regular activities for at least two weeks during the previous year – a possible indication of the experience of depressive symptoms, the CDC said in the report. “We also saw significant increases in the percentage of youth who seriously considered suicide, made a suicide plan, and attempted suicide.”
