US Envoy To Netanyahu: ‘Pump The Brakes’ On Judicial Changes

The U.S. envoy to Israel, Ambassador Tom Nides, told Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should slow down on his contentious plan to overhaul the country's judicial system.

The Biden administration thinks Netanyahu’s plan will make it harder for the U.S. to help him forge ties with Saudi Arabia or deal with Iran.

Israel resident have protested for weeks over the Netanyahu government’s plan to make changes to the county’s judiciary that critics say would erode the country’s democratic checks and balances.

Israel’s parliament could begin voting as early as Monday on a bill that would increase the government’s power in selecting judges – while setting limits to the Supreme Court’s power to strike down laws or rule against the executive branch.

“We’re telling the Prime Minister, as I tell my kids, pump the brakes, slow down, try to get a consensus, bring the parties together,” Nides said on the CNN podcast The Axe Files that was aired  late Saturday.
