  • Hundreds of University of North Carolina professors signed a letter opposing legislation that would require the teaching of America’s founding documents to all students.
  • The 673 signees claimed the legislation would be an infringement on the school’s “academic freedom.”
  • Required reading under the legislative proposal would be the U.S. Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, the Emancipation Proclamation, at least five Federalist Papers essays, MLK’s Letter from Birmingham Jail and the Gettysburg Address.
