  • President Biden on Sunday called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to express “concern” over his government’s planned changes the country’s judicial system that have resulted in widespread protests across Israel.
  • The White House said Biden reiterated U.S. concerns about the plan, which would reduce Israel’s judiciary branch insulation from the country’s political system.
  • Biden’s position on the call was reported by the Associated Press based on information from a senior administration official who requested anonymity to discuss the leaders’ private conversation.
  • However, the White House said in statement that Biden “underscored his belief that democratic values have always been, and must remain, a hallmark of the U.S.-Israel relationship, that democratic societies are strengthened by genuine checks and balances, and that fundamental changes should be pursued with the broadest possible base of popular support.”
  • Netanyahu said reportedly Sunday the changes will be executed responsibly while protecting the basic rights of all Israelis, a sign he’s remain closed to a compromise on the plan.
