California Restaurant Adds 4% Charge For Staff Health Insurance

A restaurant in Los Angeles has sparked controversy by implementing a surcharge to cover health insurance costs for their staff and requesting a “water donation” from patrons.

Alimento, located in the Silver Lake neighborhood of L.A., adds an optional four percent service charge to customers’ bills in addition to regular taxes and tips. The intention behind this additional charge is to contribute to the insurance expenses of the restaurant’s employees.

Podcaster Dave Anthony shared a receipt on Twitter, revealing the presence of the service charge. The receipt also indicated that diners could request the removal of this service charge by notifying their servers.
