California Seized Enough Fentanyl Last Yeat To Kill Everyone In World ‘Twice Over’

In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, California law enforcement officials have made a historic seizure of fentanyl—a synthetic opioid with deadly potency. Over the course of 2023, a staggering 62,000 pounds of fentanyl were intercepted and confiscated by authorities. The Governor’s office has highlighted the significance of this amount, stating it could “potentially kill the global population nearly twice over.”

The alarming statistic emerges from operations led by the California National Guard in collaboration with law enforcement agencies. These missions have focused on curbing the flow of illicit drugs through the state’s ports of entry. However, details regarding the methods used to transport the fentanyl or its form at the time of shipping remain undisclosed.

California’s successful seizures represent a rapid escalation from previous years. To put the numbers in perspective, in 2021, just over 5,300 pounds were seized by California operatives, valued at around $64 million. Fast forward to 2022, and the figures more than quintupled to approximately 28,000 pounds with a street value estimated at $230 million. The unprecedented 2023 haul is valued conservatively at $670 million, but the reasons for such a surge—increased law enforcement efforts or a spike in trafficking activity—are yet to be confirmed.

Governor Gavin Newsom has expressed his commitment to tackling the opioid crisis head-on. In his words, fentanyl is a “poison” that should never find its way into communities. The state’s response includes intensified seizure operations, widened avenues for substance abuse treatment, and staunch legal action against those involved in the distribution of the drug.

Additionally, the California National Guard’s involvement in counter-drug tasks has seen significant expansion. Their numbers have been boosted on the ground both at the borders and within cities like San Francisco, aiding the California Highway Patrol in regions marked by intense drug trafficking activities.

According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, a mere 2 milligrams of fentanyl can be fatal. In 2022, drug poisonings led to over 110,000 deaths nationwide, with fentanyl implicated in about 70% of these tragedies.

The substantial increase in fentanyl seizures underscores the ongoing battle against a grave public health threat, with California at the forefront of these efforts, aiming to preserve the safety and well-being of its residents.
