Australian actress Cate Blanchett wore what seemed as a pro-Palestine solidarity message at the red carpet of the 77th Cannes Film Festival.
Her look featured a strapless black dress with a green lining, which Blanchett made sure to brandish in front of the cameras with her gesture.
The black and the green colors in the dress, along with its white-ish colored back and the Cannes festival’s famous red carpet led many to believe that this was a political statement in support of Gaza, as the Australian star has used her social media multiple times to speak out on the “Israeli” aggression, in addition to joining the Artists4Ceasefire movement – which includes prominent celebrities, directors, and artists who addressed a letter to US President Joe Biden urging him to call for a ceasefire in the Strip.
In November, Blanchett spoke at the European Parliament Plenary Session and pleaded for “an immediate humanitarian ceasefire””
“I am not Syrian. I am not Ukrainian. I am not Yemeni. I am not Afghani. I am not from South Sudan. I am not from Israel or Palestine. I am not a politician. I am not even a pundit. But I am a witness,” Blanchett said.
“And having witnessed the human cost of war, violence and persecution visiting refugees from across the globe, I cannot look away.”
Blanchett has been working with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) since 2015 and was appointed as a goodwill ambassador in 2016.
Blanchett has undertaken missions with the UNHCR to Jordan in 2015, Lebanon in 2016 and Bangladesh in 2018 to meet with and highlight the issues faced by refugees in these areas.
