Dozens Of Wildfires Erupt In Appalachian Mountains

The combination of a cold front draped across the mid-Atlantic and dry relative humidity values helped dozens of fires explode during a wildfire outbreak in Virginia on Wednesday that continued to burn into Thursday.

Wildfires were reported from Maryland to North Carolina, with the greatest concentration appearing to be in West Virginia and Virginia.

At least five fires greater than 100 acres in size continued burning Thursday across Virginia in the Shenandoah Valley, with several near the West Virginia state line.

One of the largest fires appeared to be burning in Rockingham County, Virginia, where nearly 2,000 acres are thought to have been destroyed, and evacuation orders were issued.

In neighboring Page County, schools have been closed, and an evacuation shelter has been opened at a local high school. In Shenandoah County, a local state of emergency was declared, and residents within 2 miles of the Star Tannery area were told to evacuate on Wednesday. Some of those evacuation orders have since been lifted.

Multiple roads and highways are closed because of fire activity in Shenandoah and Page Counties, including parts of Highway 211 West.
