Florida Approves Ban On Social Media For Children Under 16

Florida lawmakers have expedited the passage of legislation aimed at barring most minors from accessing social media platforms.

The bill, which received approval from the state House on Thursday following an earlier endorsement from the Senate, is now awaiting Governor Ron DeSantis’s (R) signature. However, DeSantis indicated that he is not yet ready to sign the bill into law.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, DeSantis emphasized the importance of striking a balance between government regulations and parental involvement in addressing social media concerns.

“We’ll be wrestling with that,” he remarked.

The governor stated that he would carefully evaluate the final version of the legislation, a process likely to extend into the weekend.

“Federal law says 13 and under can’t have social media accounts. That’s not really enforced,” he noted.
