How La Niña Could Impact This Winter’s Snow Totals

  • L​a Niña is expected to be in place again this winter, and that could influence how much snow some pick up this season.
  • This periodic cooling of the equatorial eastern and central Pacific Ocean, La Niña is now forecast to remain in place for a third consecutive winter season.
  • This so-called triple-dip La Niña has only happened two other times since 1950.
  • La Niña and its warm counterpart El Niño can affect weather patterns thousands of miles away in the United States and around the world, particularly in winter.
