Vandals desecrated the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C., resulting in the closure of access to the west side of the Reflecting Pool. During the early hours of Wednesday morning, someone splattered red paint on the ground and scrawled graffiti saying ‘Free Gaza,’ which park officials called a “rare and egregious” act of vandalism.

The United States Park Police discovered the damage in Lincoln Memorial Circle and the Reflecting Pool and immediately notified National Park Service officials. Conservationists from the Park Service initiated the paint removal process after discovering the vandalism. However, officials estimate that removing the paint may take several days, requiring the use of multiple treatments.

Park officials have temporarily closed off the west side of the Reflecting Pool, including the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, while the cleaning process takes place. The Park Service has encouraged people to comply with the closure, indicating that it may take some time for the area to reopen.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time that such an incident occurred. In September 2022, the Washington Monument was defaced with paint and vulgar messages, resulting in a thorough cleaning process. Furthermore, in June 2020, the National Park Service undertook the task of cleaning buildings and monuments throughout the D.C. region after similar acts of vandalism occurred during violent protests.

The National Park Service has consistently worked to maintain the monuments, memorials, and historic landmarks that make up the fabric of D.C.’s cultural heritage. Such acts of vandalism not only cause damage but also undermine the sanctity of these sites and the values they represent. Authorities are urging protesters to express their views lawfully and peacefully without resorting to such destructive behaviors.
