- Republican David McCormick on Thursday announced he would challenge Pennsylvania Democratic Sen. Bob Casey in 2024, marking his second attempt in two years to win a Senate seat.
- McCormick narrowly lost the Republican nomination in 2022 to Dr. Mehmet Oz, whom former President Donald Trump endorsed. Oz lost the general election to then Democrat Lt. Gov. John Fetterman.
- “I have total faith and confidence in the people of Pennsylvania, but we need the right kind of leaders to turn things around and give us the opportunity we deserve,” he said at his Pittsburgh announcement, according to The Hill.
- A battleground state, Pennsylvania will be a key theater in the 2024 presidential contest. The Senate race, consequentially, is likely to be one of the most closely watched of the cycle.
- Washington Republicans reportedly wanted McCormick as their candidate, and without him having to again compete in an expensive and messy primary.
