Michigan Lt. Gov. Echos Biden: ‘Gonna Close More Coal Plants’

Michigan Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist repeated the words of President Joe Biden over the weekend, stating he would work to shut down more coal plants in the state.

  • Gilchrist, who is running for reelection with his boss, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, made the statements after President Joe Biden flip-flopped on similar comments in which he called for “a wind generation” and a shutting down of coal plants.
  • “We’re gonna strengthen our state’s response to the climate crisis and close more coal plants,” Gilchrist said to a cheering crowd.
  • Michigan is heavily reliant on coal for anything from manufacturing to keeping the lights on, according to a federal data report.
  • In addition, the Whitmer/Gilchrist administration has been fighting in court to shut down Line 5 in the Straits of Mackinac. It provides propane for much of the state, including most of the Upper Peninsula.
