- Gilchrist, who is running for reelection with his boss, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, made the statements after President Joe Biden flip-flopped on similar comments in which he called for “a wind generation” and a shutting down of coal plants.
- “We’re gonna strengthen our state’s response to the climate crisis and close more coal plants,” Gilchrist said to a cheering crowd.
- Michigan is heavily reliant on coal for anything from manufacturing to keeping the lights on, according to a federal data report.
