The University of South Carolina women’s basketball team on Sunday capped its undefeated season with an 87-75 win over the Iowa Hawkeyes and an NCAA championship.
The game also marked the end of the college career for Iowa’s Caitlin Clark, the NCAA’s all-time leading scorer.
South Carolina won on the strength of its size, freshman play and a smothering defense.
The two teams met in last year’s Final Four with the Hawkeyes springing the upset to reach the national title game.
Until Sunday, only nine teams had won a national championship with a perfect season.
Despite losing all five starters from last season, the Gamecocks had an even deeper roster this year.
