New LA Mayor’s First Move: Declare Homelessness Emergency

The new mayor, former California Democrat Rep. Karen Bass, made the declaration on the steps of City Hall.

  • Bass, a Los Angeles native, won a close, hard-fought contest in which homelessness, a how to solve the problem, was a major voter concern.
  • Bass announced Sunday that she would issue the emergency declaration and made the effort official Monday with a visit to city’s Emergency Operations Center.
  • “When life is this hard for some Angelenos, it affects all Angelenos,” said Bass, who say homelessness will be her No. 1 priority. “My emergency declaration will recognize the severity of our crisis and break new ground to maximize our ability to urgently move people inside and do so for good.”
  • Bass said that her plan will lead the city in a new direction in the battle against homelessness with a “unified and citywide strategy.”
