Newsom Suggests DeSantis ‘Scared To Death’ Of Losing Potential NRA Vote in ’24

  • California Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom made the comment Sunday about Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis after he sign a bill into law that would allow guns to be carried without permits.
  • DeSantis signed the bill last week,  just days after the country’s latest school shooting, in Nashville, Tennessee, at the Covenant School, in which three 9-year-olds and three adult teachers were killed.
  • “They don’t care about our kids because if they did, they’d ban these damn weapons of war,” Newsom said in an interview that aired Sunday on MSNBC. “They would have background checks that require some common damn sense.”
  • Newsom, who has open, ongoing rivalry with DeSantis, said he signed the bill because he’s going to seek the 2024 GOP presidential nomination and is worried about not getting support from the wing of his party that strongly supports Second Amendment rights.
  • He’s “scared to death, scared of the people, scared of the public,” Newsom said. “I think the majority of NRA members probably oppose that position.”
