Ohio House Overrides Governor’s Veto On Bill Protecting Women’s Sports

On Wednesday, the Ohio state House of Representatives successfully overrode Republican Gov. Mike DeWine’s veto of a law that prohibits “transgender” athletes from participating in women’s sports.

Governor DeWine had vetoed the bill on December 29, expressing concerns that the state would be intervening in medical decisions for children that are best left to parents.

The legislation targeted experimental transgender care for minors, including measures such as puberty blockers, hormone therapy treatments, and sex reassignment surgeries.

Following the veto, DeWine issued an executive order prohibiting transgender surgeries for children, emphasizing the role of parents in making crucial medical decisions.

The Save Adolescents from Experimentation (SAFE) Act and Save Women’s Sports Act override passed with a 65-28 vote in the House, prompting celebration from Republican lawmakers and women’s sports advocates.

DeWine maintained his stance, asserting that parents, rather than the government, should have the authority to make important medical decisions for their children.
