Crews Successfully Drain Flammable Toxics From Derailed, Smoldering Train
Crews in eastern Ohio on Monday night conducted operations to drain and burn off an "unstable" toxic chemical being carried in five rail cars of a freight train that derailed in a fiery wreck Friday night.

- Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine issue the warning Monday as emergency crews prepared to try to go into the burning wreckage to relieve some of the toxic materials in some of the case to avert a catastrophic explosion.
- The plan for a controlled release of the chemicals – vinyl chloride – came with an evacuation order the the activation of the Ohio National Guard to secure a 2-mile perimeter around the derailment that happened Friday night.
- About 50 of the train’s 100 cars derailed in the city of East Palestine, near the Pennsylvania border, and continue to smolder.
- “We have put together a plan to manually vent the cars. The contents will be drained in a controlled fashion,” railroad operator Norfolk Southern Corp said.
