Former NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines criticized the effectiveness of Title IX after transgender athlete Meghan Cortez-Fields, who competed on a men’s team for three years, broke a collegiate record for the second time in three months.

Gaines, a vocal opponent of transgender athletes participating in school sports, condemned Cortez-Fields’ latest achievement.

The Ramapo College of New Jersey senior set a new record in the 200-meter individual medley with a time of 2:08:20 on Friday, surpassing previous records in the NJ Athletic Conference.

“Male swimmer from Ramapo College sets another school record in women’s event. Now tell me again the strides women have made when society applauds a man for pushing us off our own podium,” Gaines posted on X following Cortez-Fields’ victory.

“Title IX literally means nothing at this point,” she added. Cortez-Fields faced controversy from anti-trans activists in November while setting a new record and securing first place in the 100-yard butterfly event at a Pennsylvania meet.

Cortez-Fields transitioned and joined the women’s team during the fall season, sparking condemnation that led to the college’s Instagram post celebrating the win in Pennsylvania being deleted.
