Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. issued an apology to his family members who expressed objections to a television advertisement aired during the Super Bowl, which repurposed a spot from his uncle’s 1960 campaign.

The retro-themed ad, sponsored by a PAC supporting Kennedy’s candidacy, adopts the soundtrack and theme of President John F. Kennedy’s 1960 campaign ad. Featuring a dramatic orchestral opening and a jingle repeatedly chanting the word “Kennedy,” the spot drew attention during its broadcast.

In addition to the nostalgic elements, the ad includes lyrics questioning the qualities desired in a president, seemingly aimed at Kennedy’s older competitors, President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. Kennedy, at 70 years old, appears to challenge criticisms of age and mental cognition in the race.

Following the ad’s release, Kennedy’s cousin Bobby Shriver expressed disapproval, citing their family’s values, particularly regarding healthcare. Another cousin, Mark Shriver, echoed Bobby’s sentiments, indicating agreement with his brother’s stance.

In response to the criticism, Kennedy expressed regret, emphasizing that he was not involved in the creation or approval of the advertisement. He clarified that federal regulations prohibit coordination between Super PACs and his campaign, extending his sincerest apologies to Bobby Shriver and their family.

The PAC supporting Kennedy’s presidential bid, American Values 2024, invested $7 million in the ad. However, the group faced allegations from the Democratic National Committee regarding its contributions to Kennedy’s campaign efforts.
