Actor Ryan Gosling has come under fire for his alleged “virtue signaling.” The 43-year-old actor recently criticized the Academy Awards for not nominating director Greta Gerwig and actress Margot Robbie for their roles in the film “Barbie.”

Gosling was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Ken in the film. However, on Tuesday, he claimed that the Academy had overlooked the fact that the movie would not exist without the two talented women.

“There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film. No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius. To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement. ‘Their work should be recognized along with the other very deserving nominees,” Gosling wrote.

However, many critics have called for Gosling to denounce his own nomination and boycott the Oscars altogether in a show of solidarity. People argue that his words may be powerful, but taking action against the prestigious institution would be an even stronger display of support.

The Academy has been facing widespread criticism in recent years for its lack of diversity and inclusion. This year’s nominations have already caused outrage, having left out several notable performances by actors of color.

Gosling’s comments have further fuelled the ongoing debate surrounding diversity and representation in the film industry. Critics have argued that while his words are commendable, taking a stand against the Academy would be a more significant move.
