Santa Monica Wants End To LA County Needle Exchange In Popular Park

Santa Monica city officials, residents are calling for end  to Los Angeles County Department of Public Health's weekly needle exchange program in Reed Park, a popular downtown open space with tennis and basketball courts.

  • Santa Monica Mayor Sue Himmelrich sent an open letter last week to county officials in which she called for the program to be moved from public spaces in the city to preferably an indoor site with better services for substance abuse and mental health.
  • She also cited such related issues as homelessness and maintaining access to the city’s open spaces.
  • However, Himmelrich said she also understands the city’s “limited regulatory authority” in the matter.
