Turkey Arrests Building Contractors After Historically Deadly Quake

Officials in Turkish have either detained or issued arrest warrants for roughly 130 people allegedly involved in shoddy and illegal construction methods following the recent earthquake in which the collapse of thousands of buildings contributed to deaths.

  • The death toll as of Sunday, six days after the quake that hit  southeastern Turkey and northern Syria is 33,000.
  • Roughly 80,000 others have been injured, with number expect to grow as bodies continued to be uncovered.
  • Turkey has construction codes that meet earthquake-engineering standards, but are reportedly rarely enforced, which is perhaps or likely why thousands of buildings collapsed or were several damaged with residents inside.
