U.S. military teams are evacuating U.S. Embassy personnel in Haiti amid the deadly gang violence that threatens to topple the island nation.
The teams are airlifting nonessential personnel, Reuters and other news gathering agencies report Sunday.
The U.S. military is also bolstering security at the embassy, in the country’s capital city of in Port-au-Prince.
“At the request of the Department of State, the U.S. military conducted an operation to augment the security of the U.S. Embassy at Port-au-Prince, allow our Embassy mission operations to continue, and enable nonessential personnel to depart,” the U.S. Southern Command said in its statement.
Haiti is under a state of emergency amid skirmishes between armed gang members and the Haitian National Police.
