USA Powerlifting Must Allow Biological Males In Women’s Division: Court

The change follows transgender athlete JayCee Cooper last week having won a discrimination case against USA Powerlifting after the federation banned Cooper from competing in female events.

  • The court cited in it ruling “increased risk of depression and suicide, lack of access to coaching and practice facilities, or other performance suppression common to transgender persons.”
  • The ruling also states the federation must “cease and desist from all unfair discriminatory practices” because of sexual orientation and gender identity and revise its policy related to those issues within two weeks, which means transgender athletes will be able to compete in the women’s category after previously being banned.
  • Cooper, who transitioned from male to female before becoming involved in the spor,  filed a complaint in 2019 with the Minnesota Department of Human Rights, alleging it violated the state’s Human Rights Act by banning transgender athletes from competing in female competitions.
  • Cooper then filed a lawsuit against USA Powerlifitng in state court in 2021.
