UC Berkeley Prof Taught With Remains Suspected To Be Native American

Famed University of California, Berkeley professor Tim White used a vast collection of human remains to teach his anthropology students, then in 2020 the university issues a systemwide order to search for human remains.

  • An analysis of the collection by state officials in May reportedly found it includes the remains of at least 95 people excavated from gravesites – many of them likely Native Americans from California.
  • White, a world-renowned expert on human evolution, said the collection was passed down through generations of anthropology professors before he started teaching with it in the late 1970s.
  • He also said the collection – bones sorted by body part and stored in wooden bins – came with no records.
