Youngkin Makes Virginia Latest State to Ban Legacy Admissions Into Public Colleges

Virginia GOP Gov. Glenn Youngkin has signed a bill banning legacy admissions at public colleges in the state.

In signing the bill, Youngkin makes the most recent in several states  having move to eliminate legacy admissions, which are based on family member having previously attended the school.

The Supreme Court last year struck down admissions based on race.

The bill Youngkin signed Friday pass unanimously in both chambers of the state legislature before reaching his desk.

It’s about fairness,” bill sponsor state Democratic Sen. Schuyler VanValkenburg told the Associated Press about the bill. “It’s about higher ed being available to everybody.”
