Texas Gov. Greg Abbott says the state is building an 80-acre base camp in Eagle Pass for state National Guard soldiers deployed for Operation Lone Star – his administration’s $10 billion effort to deter people from illegal entering from Mexico.
The Supreme Court made a ruling last month that maintained the long-running precedent that the federal government — not individual states — has authority to enforce border security, but Abbott has forged ahead with is own efforts, amid record immigration numbers on the southern U.S. border.
Abbott said Friday the camp will house 1,800 to 2,300 soldiers and that each guardsman will have an individual room.
“Before this effort here, they had been living in conditions that were atypical for military operations,” Abbott said. “It’s essential that we build this base camp for the soldiers.”
Right now, troops are reportedly scattered around the area in tents, hotels and private residences.
