California Still Hasn’t Released September Heat Wave Death Count

The September heat wave in California was the worst ever in the state during that month, with temperatures as high as 116 degrees.

  • The heat wave lasted 10 days and pushed the state’s power grid to the limit.
  • Some of the hottest temperatures throughout the state included 116 degrees in Sacramento, 114 in Napa, 109 in Long Beach.
  • But for all the temperatures data, there is little information on how many people died in the heat wave or on how many got sick, according to the Los Angeles Times.
  • “We’re not respecting the most important natural disaster that we do get,” said David Eisenman, co-director of the UCLA Center for Public Health and Disasters. “We’re not really giving it the attention it deserves, and the state releasing data is not some abstract thing — people need to know how harmful it was if they’re going to start to respect it.”
