Chicago Mayor Election Day Cometh, Lightfoot Just Trying To Get To Runoff

Democrat Mayor Lori Lightfoot faces eight challengers in Tuesday’s contest, a field so crowd no clear winner will likely emerge.

  • Lightfoot is seeking a second term, but her first term has been beset by high crime numbers, including those for murder and other violent offenses.
  • Regardless the of the results Tuesday, it considered almost certain that Lightfoot won’t crack the 50% mark needed to avoid a two-person runoff in April.
  • “I’m very confident that we will be in a runoff, but we can’t take anything for chance,” Lightfoot said Thursday after breakfast with black business leaders, according to the Associated Press.
  • Lightfoot, who herself won in 2019 in a runoff, has largely blamed the pandemic for the crime spike, saying “We have been through hell and back in the last four years. No one could have anticipated that we were going to go through a once-in-a-lifetime global pandemic.”
