City Officials Consider End To Right Turn On Red Amid Spike In Cycling, Pedestrian Deaths

  •  A sharp increase in the number of pedestrians and bicyclists getting injured or killed has led local governments to numerous policy and infrastructure changes and proposed changes.
  • Among the biggest policy debates is on whether to ban right turns at red lights.
  • The City Council for Washington, D.C.,  last year approved a right-on-red ban that takes effect in 2025, and  Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has called for restricting right turns on red.
