The Iowa high school principal shot during a Jan. 4 mass shooting has died.

The death of Perry High School Principal Dan Marburger was announced Sunday by his wife on a GoFundMe page.

Marburger had been the principal of Perry High School since 1995.

The shooting occurred in the school’s cafeteria, resulting in the death of an 11-year-old middle school student and injuries to six others. The 17-year-old student who opened fire also died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Following the shooting, the Iowa Department of Public Safety acknowledged Marburger’s selfless actions in an apparent effort to protect his students.

Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation spokesman Mitch Mortvedt mentioned that Marburger did significant things to protect others during the shooting, although specific details were not released.

Perry Superintendent Clark Wicks referred to Marburger as a hero for intervening with the teenage gunman to allow students to escape.
