The largest migrant caravan in over a year is currently making its way through Mexico towards the US southern border. Consisting of an estimated 8,000 asylum seekers, primarily from Cuba, Haiti, and Honduras, the group set off from Tapachula towards Alvaro Obregón on Sunday, walking more than nine miles on their journey.

Their Christmas Eve celebration was a simple affair, with sandwiches, a bottle of water, and a banana handed out by a local church. With nowhere to go, they were forced to spend Christmas night sleeping on cardboard or plastic under awnings and tents.

This caravan marks the largest migrant group approaching the US southern border since June 2022. Accompanying the group is Luis Garcia Villagran, a radical migrant rights activist who warns that the caravan could grow even larger by the time it reaches the border, potentially reaching 15,000 people. Many of the migrants carry signs reading “Exodus from poverty.”

Despite facing numerous challenges, the group remains determined to reach the United States. Villagran has vowed that they won’t stop and will keep walking until they reach their destination.

The caravan’s journey has been met with mixed reactions, with some people expressing concern over the potential strain on resources and security at the border. Others have emphasized the desperation of the migrants, reminding the public that they are fleeing extreme poverty, violence, and political instability in their home countries.

As the caravan continues towards the US border, the world watches and waits to see its outcome and the response it will receive from US authorities.
