Democratic lawmakers in the Nevada legislature approved an amendment aimed at penalizing school boards that restrict transgender individuals who identify as biological males from using women’s locker rooms and participating in girls’ sports teams.
The amendment, which was passed on Friday without undergoing a hearing, imposes an administrative penalty of $5,000 per day on school boards in the state that deny students the opportunity to engage in “school activities” based on their “gender identity or expression.”
Notably, this contentious amendment concerning school penalties was reportedly introduced after the initial version of Assembly Bill No. 423 had already received unanimous, bipartisan backing. However, the amendment faced opposition from the GOP, as it garnered zero Republican votes and was solely supported by Democrats.
